Administrative Assistant if you prefer–but if you answer the phone, file, make photocopies, schedule appointments, and the like, basically you’re a secretary. It’s a word that brings to mind typewriters and rotatary phones and sweater sets, male bosses followed around by fast-talking women in high heels and nylons, offices where you could still smoke and a wet bar was as common as a desk–or was that only in the movies? Whatever. My grandmother was a secretary and 30 years later, with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree under my belt, I’m still playing basically the same role. And I’m a little pissed about it. More often I’m depressed, but “depressed secretary” doesn’t quite have the same ring.
